Best Bang for the Buck by Far
By Philip H. Li
The Intel i5-760 is easily the winner when it comes to performance for value. A quad core processor with a great base clock and amazing overclocking ability, the 760 offers great value for the 1156 socket. When deciding which processor to go with for my new rig, I was torn between the i5-760 and the i7-870. I had already settled on the 1156 socket, with the P55 chipset. I didn't need the top-of-the-line performance with the 1366 socket and X55 chipset, and the i7-9xx processors were both too expensive and too hot for my taste. The i5-760 and the i7-870 are basically identical, with the main difference between the two being that the i7-870 has Intel's Hyperthreading technology enabled, which simulates two virtual cores on each actual physical core.Ultimately, that's what made the decision for me. Hyperthreading can, theoretically, double performance. However, currently, in real world situations, performance gains are typically only seen by programs designed to take advantage of hyperthreading, like video editing and encoding software. For non-multi-threaded applications, including virtually all games, a hyperthreaded processor can actually even perform worse than a comparable non-hyperthreaded processor (like the 870 vs. the 760), due to "collisions" as the processor attempts to optimize processes, and in general can also run hotter. So I went with the 760, saved a few bucks over the 870, and never looked back. It runs nice and cool, idling at 30C and maxing out at 51C under Prime95 load, with almost no noticeable ramp up in the fan rpms.Setup-----Case: Antec Nine Hundred TwoPSU: Corsair CMPSU-750TX 750WMotherboard: Biostar T5XE CFX-SLICPU: Intel Core i5-760RAM: A-DATA 2x2GB DDR3-1600Heatsink: Cooler Master Hyper 212+Graphics: MSI N460GTX-1GD5Hard Drive: WD Caviar Blue WD6400AAKS (x2, Raid 0)

No regrets
By RAFAEL I DELEON
Works fantastic. No hiccups. Only problem I had was the thermal paste on the stock cooler was terrible. It didn't make any contact so it would shut down since it got hot at 98C. I bought some Artic Silver to apply to it. and it has run at 40C ish ever since.
