The mod-friendly Special 6 is easy to customize for home amp builders and tube amp enthusiasts. The Special 6 gets its powerful tube sound from one 12AX7 preamp tube and one 6V6 output tube. It boasts a footswitchable Gain Boost feature that significantly expands its range of tones -- it's the only amp in its class that excels at both clean and overdriven tones, and it's the only amp in its class to offer a footswitchable boost. With the Gain Boost, players can instantly toggle between clean rhythm tones and overdriven leads, essentially duplicating the footswitchable functions of a 2-channel amp in an all-tube, handwired, simple, 2-knob package. To further expand its range of tones, the Special 6 also features a High/Low power switch that enhances low-volume tones with extra-smooth richness (when in half-power mode). It's a great feature for recording, or for low-volume "bedroom" players. In high-power mode, it's one of the few amps in its class that is loud enough to compete with a strong drummer. No better investment in tone for under 2 bills

I've owned my Special 6 for 1 day. I hate guys that qualify their reviews by running down the litany of great gear they own/owned, so I'll skip that part. I'm in the business and I've got lots of amps...What I want from THIS amp is simple: SIMPLICITY itself.Because it's not going to venture beyond the living room, I want something small enough that my wife won't give me too much grief, something that sounds GREAT without tons of tweaking and/or pedals, and something inexpensive. Anybody that has sought similar knows that any combination of 2 of those things usually precludes the third.NOT SO IN THIS CASE!!!It's tiny and light. OK...my wife WILL give me grief, but that's her job, and I've never owned a smaller amp. Period.It sounds FANTASTIC. A Tele and a cable were all I needed to coax GREAT tones as soon as my Special 6 came out of the box. I just dimed the volume on both guitar and amp(without boost), and left the Amp's chickenhead tone knob right down the middle. Laying into the guitar I could get fantastic brown tones with tons of chime and definition. To clean up, I didn't adjust my volume pot, just my attack. The clean tones are really satisfying, with a little growl to remind you of what awaits when you decide to lean into it. I like the crisp attack of a 10" speaker, so I don't miss the add'l bottom of a 12".200 bucks??? I've spent more on stompboxes. So what if China isn't the home of Rock-N-Roll...Remember the part about this being my living room amp? I'm immediately thinking of getting a second and running the 2 in stereo for club gigs. Walk onstage with a 2 tiny 6 watt amps and watch the sound man become your BEST friend

Love this little amp

An unbelieveable value that really delivers. Great build quality, great snarling overdrive, but most surprising is the sweet shimmering clean tone. Sounds great out of the box - I am quite impressed with the stock 10" speaker.....I run the SP6 thru cabs with a Celestion Vintage 30 and G12H30 and they definitely win, but not by so much! Simple circuit makes swapping tubes interesting for sure. I am considering getting another one so I can keep one stock for reference and free the other for mods.

Loving it!

My buddy bought the head version of this about 6 months ago. The main attraction for me is all the headroom this amp provides. I tried a few other lunch box amps but this to me has the best features. It has a 6V6 output tube which give it great headroom. My buddy replaces the 6v6 with an EL86 and it really growls. I even shot over an email to the VHT web site with some general questions before I bought it. They replied and the guy was totally a gear head and gave me some cool suggestions for modifications. Anyway loving it and recommend it. Thanks.
