Introducing the New and Improved Version 3 WoodRiver Bench Planes! Our new Version 3 bench planes are still based on the reliable Bedrock design and feature heavy, stress -relieved ductile iron castings, fully machined adjustable frogs and A-2 blades but we took the opportunity between manufacturing runs to do a critical review and make a few improvements. Weve changed the shape of the rear tote and increased the diameter of the blade adjustment wheel to make advancing the blade a bit easier. We improved the lateral adjustment lever and added a traditional style bearing for better control of the blade. Weve made numerous changes to the castings that result in better feedback and a solid feel to the user. Working closely with our own manufacturer, weve continued to make improvements in machining, finish and functionality which we feel have yielded hand planes that are meant to be used and offer an extraordinary value. Tools require minimal tune-up prior to use. A versatile tool, the No. 4 is ideal for smoothing and other light jobs where you dont need the length or heft of a larger plane. Weighing in at 5 lbs., this plane is light enough to use for longer periods, but has plenty of heft to slice through difficult grain without stopping.

Nice plane

Largely based on the favorable Fine Woodworking review I looked more closely at the Wood River planes. I purchased a #4 and %6 and have been quite pleased with both. The various machined parts, wood and steel, are nicely done. The blade is heavy and sharpens up nicely. The blade adjustment works well. With a minor sharpening these planes move right into service and do the job very well. Doesn't hurt that the price is lower than other higher-end planes.

This plane has all I could ask for. It has a good weight, nice in the hand, just maks me happy when I use it. Blade was good out of the box only took about 10 min on my wet stones to get stupid sharp. all in all just a damn good deal. I would rather use power most of the time but using this plane just maks me smile. if you are looking to just remove the mill marks not wanting to use hand tools, this will change your mind and you WILL find yourself reaching for it alot more than you think. I have more than 20 planes .and I cant say it is my favorite, I sure can't say it is not.

I do high-end remodeling and cabinet making for a living. While most of what I do involves power tool woodworking I still need some good hand planes that actually work. There is no time here to go into the long and sad history of the disappearance of moderately-priced decent quality planes. For a long time, in order to get a decent working plane you had to either restore vintage planes yourself or pay really high prices for the near collector quality British Planes or those great Planes from Maine. It seemed I would have to spend a fortune to get decent working planes, but then I came across the WoodRiver V3 series. I initially purchased the #4 in the V3 series and am now a WoodRiver convert. Upon inspecting this plane I was very impressed. In the first place, the sole was dead flat. NO flattening was needed at all and this is a big, big plus in my book. Since the sole was flat there was very little tuning to do. The blade which is A2 steel took a bit of flattening, but then plane blades generally do. All in all the parts were well machined and the handles were done nicely as well. The V3s lateral adjuster is much nicer than the earlier WoodRiver series, having a solid tang and a bearing like the Lie-Nielsen. The V3 also has a Lie-Nielsen style improved heavy chip breaker. The blade came flat ground at 25 degrees. I used my Tormek grinder to grind past any bad edge temper and gave the blade a 25 degree hollow grind. Next, I honed a 30 degree secondary bevel on it with a 6000 Japanese water stone and polished the back the same way. Then I put it all back together, dialed in the frog and gave it a whirl. The results were beautiful. The plane has mass and and accuracy. The lateral adjustments were firm and the depth adjuster was precise. I could easily set it for feathery gossamer shavings or solid curls. I got full width shavings too. Just really, really, nice! It was so nice I went back and got the #3,#5 and #6. These too were solid performers. I gave them all the same small tuning and put them through the paces and found the edge retention to be very good. The WoodRiver V3s are solidly built Bedrock-style planes that perform wonderfully and are available at a very fair price. With the bubinga handles and stainless cap irons they are handsome planes too.
