Pleasing Surprise

1 W Fail-Safe Long Range FM Transmitter - TX-01S : Toggle from 0.1 W to 1.0 W Power LevelsWhen I see only a few reviews on a product, especially if they aren't very detailed, I tend to be pessimistic. But I bought the HLLY tx-01s because of some negative reviews on the cheaper products that offered similar specifications. The unit was shipped by FS-Electronics and arrived by priority mail, 4 days before I expected it. It was boxed and protected. I am rating it four-star because the single page of instructions is so skimpy. After I attached the antenna and plugged in the power supply, the menu system was locked up on a password screen. There was no mention of this in the documentation. I unplugged the power supply for a few seconds and when I plugged it back in, it booted to the standard menu. I am thinking the password is probably used to access factory settings. There is a little more information on the website which shows spectrum analyzer readouts and a power vs. frequency graph. Luckily, the menu is pretty self explanatory. I set it to .1 watt and the lowest frequency that my car FM receiver would tune (87.7). The audio on the received FM signal was extrememly low. Then I figued out that when you leave the menu system, it defaults to a home screen showing the transmit frequency, power and the audio level. This is where you set the stereo input level. The input is optimized for the low-level lineout of most devices (ipod, satellite radio, computer. But if you put too much audio into the transmitter, you get distortion and must control the audio level at the source. I set the input to 70 and adjusted the source for zero destortion on bass notes. --- Operating the transmitter from my daylight basement (several feet below ground level), on the lowest power setting (.1W), it provided a rock-solid signal throughout the house including upstairs bedrooms and the outside decks. The audio level of the received signal was the same as the commercial stations. There was no distortion or hum, and the stero separation was good. On the car radio, the signal dropped out in about a block. In the house, I could still tune a fairly weak, commercial station at 88.1 without noticing any effects from my signal at 87.7. Using a sensitive communcations receiver, I found several spurious signals between 80-85 Mhz, but these may have been a product of receiver overload. If there were spurs in the FM band, above my frequency setting, the commerical stations masked them. When I moved the transmitter upstairs, at maximum power the range on the car radio was almost half a mile but the power level swamped the household FM receivers and resulted in some hum on one of the cheaper radios. The low power setting is adequate for home use.

Great Transmitter

This transmitter works great! All I wanted to do was play music around the house and property. I was amazed at the clarity and distance that it is able to perform at on the lowest setting. I want to experiment with the settings some more but right out of the box with the rubber antenna it performs excellent. I would recommend this over any of the other systems out there such as the x10 and others like it because of all the interference and static. By the way- I believe it actually is a .1 - 1.5w transmitter, because the settings go from 1 to 15. Maybe someone else could answer this?

Kick Ass FM Transmitter in Congested Spectrum

I have been searching for a long time for a decent FM transmitter. I live in a very frequency congested metro area. I have tried to make a Crane transmitter work for years with very little success. The Crane is now in the trash. I stumbled across this and it looked good.After lots of internet research, I was able to find a retailer in China that sold it for $100 less than Amazon and would deliver in weeks rather than days. I chose to pay the extra and purchase from Amazon. Also, all of the product reviews around the internet were mostly favorable, save the people complaining about this being made in China. If I could have purchased a ready made transmitter built in the US, I would have. But since I could not find anything ready made, not in a kit, I chose this.Anyway, this thing kicks ass. I am able to feed it from my computer and transmit around the house and yard without any interference. I went online and found a "vacant" frequency in my area and set the transmitter to that frequency. The clarity is amazing. I am using the included rubber duck antenna, and thinking about purchasing the portable antenna. I adjusted the power, starting at 500mW and increase it from there.Since I only have one "vacant" freq in my area, I turn up the power so that I get a clear transmission. The power output that I set depends on if I am in the house or outside. If I am outside I will turn it up to between 750-1000mW. That gives me a clear, static free stereo signal even in the back yard.The only negative thing that I would post is that I do not like the timer feature. Every time I turn it on, it want me to set an auto-off timer. It is really annoying. But if that is the only annoyance, I can live with that.Oh the instructions that come with it are horrible. Go online and do a quick search to find good meaningful instructions.
