4Great NAS for home or small business
By Nomad77
Unless you have some technical computer/networking knowledge you will have trouble setting up a device like this. I am computer consultant and it took about day of work to get this setup completely.Pros:Small, compact, silent.Great fault tolerance. Losing power while writing won't cause the array to be rebuilt.LCD panel on unit is a nice feature.4 USB 2.0 ports - you can connect 4 USB external drives and even a printer. Can work with 3TB drives.Remote access from any web browser or mobile phone to your data.Hot-swap drives - don't need to shut-down unit to replace drive.Decent price.Cons:Not so fast. Will be much slower than using a USB drive. But this is normal for any network attached device. Can't access USB drives from the web or mobile app.-------------------------------------Ok, now some setup notes and tricks:1. The first drive in the system (Drive 1) has to be a new or clean drive. If the drive was used in another computer you will need to do a Quick Low Format on it first. Seagate installs the OS onto this drive the first time it boots up so this process can take a few minutes. Until you see the Seagate Blackarmor message on the LCD panel you won't be able to access it from the any software and you won't find it on the network. It has to complete that boot installation without any errors.2. Once it comes up and you can access it from the web browser you should manually update the firmware to the latest version from the Seagate website. The Auto update didn't work.3. After it's available on the network you can add any used drives to the system. You will need to click on the Claim icon next to the drive to use it.4. To setup Global Access you need to create a Global Access user account for each user. So first you have to Enable Global Access for the admin account using one Global Access account. After you can Enable it for each users using a new account you have created for each of them. To make your web and mobile access Read Only create a remote user account and assign it read only permission then use this account to Enable Global Access on.5. For the fastest speed you need to be running on a Gigabit network. That is both your computer NIC and the router/switch has to be Gigabit capable. Then you have to make sure BOTH your router firmware (if using the switch on the router) and your network card driver is updated to the latest version.

5Easy to setup, and works great
By J. Smith
This server is used in a relatively small design studio to ferry assets between 12 workstations (all Macs) and our in-house commercial photography studio. It was all setup and ready to initialize in about 15 minutes. It took longer to get the equipment out of the box and remove all the protective plastic wrap. I bought the bare box and bought the drives separately (4 - 2TB Seagate 7200 rpm drives). Just slide them in and let it self configure. The initialization took overnight to run through and configure itself, but that's all done without any intervention from outside. Just come in in the morning, and its done and waiting to work.File transfers are fast enough for us; I don't know how it compares with the latest and greatest in terms of speed, but the difference between a few nanoseconds is lost on me anyway. Some have said that setting up remote access is a pain, but we found that none of our employees had any problems once the administrator (me) had them setup in the system. We can access files from home without a hitch.I'm sure there are bigger, faster, perhaps even better systems you can buy, but for my money, the initial cost and ease of setup for a fully raid protected 8TB server with remote access makes this a great buy.

3Good, But a Few Problems
By Gus Gwynne
I'm an IT pro, so the fact that I found this easy to set up and get running may or may not be helpful. Can't speak to how easy it would be for a hobbyist or whatever. It's basically a good product, but the software that comes with it is problematic in a major way. I tested backing up my system disk to it, then booting from their bootable CD, in order to restore the system. But it gets to the point of asking for credentials to connect to the NAS, and won't let me type them in. Simply no input possible in the application. Mouse works, and the keyboard is communicating correctly with the BIOS (tested that), but the application won't accept keyboard input.Turns out that some serious digging on Seagate's support forums shows that this is a known problem, with multiple customers, and Seagate has yet to respond to it. I don't know how prevalent it is. It's quite likely that there is some combination of hardware, etc., that doesn't work, and others do. But that's speculation on my part. It definitely doesn't work for me.I can work around that, by copying the system backup to an internal drive and restoring from there. No keyboard input needed for that. So not a catastrophic problem. But definitely a problem. If they could fix that issue, would be a 5.
