After thorough research, Pearl discovered that the inner ply of a drum shell has the greatest effect on the tonal quality of the drum. Therefore, putting Birch on the inner ply of these drums gives them a naturally “EQ’d,” punchy tone with enhanced projection and sustain. 6 plies in the rack tom shells and 8 plies in the floor tom and bass drum shells provide an amazingly balanced sound, unprecedented for this category.

Great for home / studio

This is a great set of drums for the drummer playing at home or in the studio. The kit is on the smaller side 20x18, 10x8, 12x9 and 14x14 as opposed to another popular configuration of 22" bass drum and larger toms.This kit sounds fantastic.. toms have a great balanced and warm tone with a the right amount of attack. I've tried other birch sets but this one was easy to tune and is the best sounding. Pearl makes high quality stuff at reasonable prices and I was very impressed with the stability and quality of this kit ( mainly a comment on the hardware, rims etc ). I got this kit on Amazon at a steal of a price so that makes it all that much sweeter.Previously I had a Pearl Masters MCX kit ( next line up with maple shells ) .. I ended up selling those to a guy who made me an offer I couldnt refuse. Those drums were great but were much more ambient and live sounding than this birch set ... would have been great for live work if I was in a band but I'm just playing at home. This kit sounds tighter and less ambient.. not that these sound dead but just the right amount of tone and punch. For me I realized that I MUCH prefer the sound of this kit in my home that the bigger Masters MCX maple set. These are also not as loud ... I bet these would sound fantastic mic'd up.I'm giving this kit 4 stars just based on the metal snare drum this kit comes with. It is very nice, sounds better than a couple other snares I have but in the end is nothing to write home about .. just a nice sounding and looking snare.I'm convinced Pearl just makes great products!
