Product Description

Introducing the New and Improved Version 3 WoodRiver Bench Planes! Our new Version 3 bench planes are still based on the reliable Bedrock design and feature heavy, stress -relieved ductile iron castings, fully machined adjustable frogs and A-2 blades but we took the opportunity between manufacturing runs to do a critical review and make a few improvements. Weve changed the shape of the rear tote and increased the diameter of the blade adjustment wheel to make advancing the blade a bit easier. We improved the lateral adjustment lever and added a traditional style bearing for better control of the blade. Weve made numerous changes to the castings that result in better feedback and a solid feel to the user. Working closely with our own manufacturer, weve continued to make improvements in machining, finish and functionality which we feel have yielded hand planes that are meant to be used and offer an extraordinary value. Tools require minimal tune-up prior to use. The No. 6, also called a fore plane is good for jointing edges and flattening and smoothing large surfaces, such as table tops, panels and workbench tops, where you might not want or need the length or weight of a larger plane. The extra length and width of the sole enables it to shave bumps and bridge valleys 7/8 wide better than a shorter plane. Weighing in at a stout 7-3/4 lbs, this planes additional heft makes it easier for you to shave difficult stock without breaking a sweat.

5I Needed a Big Plane
By David S. Borsheim
I desperately needed a big plane for a project I am working on. Having read some reviews on the WoodRiver line, I decided to give one a try. It just so happened that on the day it arrived, I received a #5 Sweetheart that I bought at auction. So I sharpened them both up, did a little minor tuning and put them to work. The Sweetheart was up first and clearly demonstrated why it is still the plane that everyone is trying to copy. Then I tried the WoodRiver and what a surprise. It was every bit as smooth and easy as the 1910 - 1912 Sweetheart. It felt good in the hands, the heft was perfect and the balance was dead on. It was everything that I could have hoped for in a plane. The work that I have done with it speaks for itself. For any future hand planes, I will look at WoodRiver sooner rather than later.

4Excellent plane for the money
By G. Robinson
I got this "used?" a couple months ago (it had no signs of wear except for a small chip of some dark wood in the throat. The shipping gunk was still on the capiron, chip beaker and iron.Very nicely built on par with the Lee Valley and only a little inferior to the Lie-neilson No 6 ($375). This is a Fore plane which is used for light joinery and truing boards. It is slightly smaller than the LV or LN planes but is a lot less expensive. The reason that I did not give this a 5 in spite of it being a real bargain compared to other planes of similar quality is that Woodcraft doesn't offer any replacement irons nor any specialty irons for this plane! This is a great value and far far better then the Gröz or the Anant (also Chinese made but lacking QC).

5Nice plane
By Mike Davison
Largely based on the favorable Fine Woodworking review I looked more closely at the Wood River planes. I purchased a #4 and %6 and have been quite pleased with both. The various machined parts, wood and steel, are nicely done. The blade is heavy and sharpens up nicely. The blade adjustment works well. With a minor sharpening these planes move right into service and do the job very well. Doesn't hurt that the price is lower than other higher-end planes.
