3So beautiful but...
By Harts
I am having a huge love-hate relationship with this tableware. The quality, weight, balance, finish and styling is phenomenal....gorgeous....perfect!Sadly, it just isn't practical. It has to be hand-washed and immediately hand-dried. Otherwise, it spots to a degree of spotting that I've never seen before! Rewashing, even with a lot of scrubbing, doesn't get rid of the spots. The only way to make them spot-free is to use stainless cleanser.

5Bellissimo, signore e signori, bellissimo!
By Paolo
When I was a kid we had two sets of silverware: One for everyday use and a different one for special occasions. I hated the holiday set. It was heavy and edgy; the forks had bulky, square prongs that split a potato rather than piercing it. The spoons were so big that we kids always had soup dripping down our faces. You've seen stuff like that. Of course, a kid doesn't know that life could be different. I was resigned to the bulky silverware just like the taste of fish oil, kisses from an aunt I did not like or a dentist's mechanical drill that vibrated my whole skull.Things are better now. Dentistry came a long way and the aunt doesn't come around anymore. I still take fish oil but only so that I can annoy the kids and make them take it, too. Otherwise they'd never want to grow up. We take our turns, make faces, swallow and say "blaw". I always point out smugly that I actually don't have to take fish oil anymore because I am a grownup. That way our kids will want to get their own kids to have someone to annoy and boss around. Because of such seemingly trivial events the Western civilization may not end abruptly and those of you who don't have kids because you spend all your time reading Amazon consumer reviews will at least have someone else's kids to wheel you around the old folks' home. But I digress. This silverware would have done it for us kids back then. It has a clean modern design but with a traditional handle shape---just like our comfortable old everyday set---while being nice enough to impress the in-laws over holidays. I tried some of the other Henckels thin-handled sets including those with "standing knives" but I did not like them. It's form over function. If you want your knife to stand on its edge you can always stick it in your food. My mother-in-law gives me "the look" when I do it but I don't want to talk about that right now. These handles have enough shape and mass to hold steady and keep from spinning in your hand but not so much bulk to look like it's an arthritis-friendly design. The knife handles are hollow---there is a straight seam where the blade is attached with a smooth transition so you won't be looking at unidentifiable food sediments in the crease like with our previous knives. The hollow handles give the knives good balance. The forks were designed for forking---I successfully tried them on a boiled potato. The spoons are unusual---a sleek drop-like shape that at first seemed smaller in volume compared to other spoons. They are not---the spoons have enough depth to make up for the missing surface so I won't lag behind during supper on account of a small spoon and I won't get "the look". Of course, unless people brought their own spoons to dinner it would not matter anyway because everyone at the table would have pretty much the same equipment just like in NASCAR. That's also why we decided to buy two sets so we have enough standardized gear for everyone. The forks and spoons have stamps on the underside that say: J.A. Henckels International 18/10 China. They are letting us know that there is 18% chromium and 10% nickel in the stainless steel and also that we can't pay the Germans to manufacture such things anymore. Not in affluent Solingen, for sure, and impoverished East Germans won't do it for less anymore because it would not be fair and also because they'd lose their welfare checks. Fortunately today's Germans are very sensible people and when they hire the Chinese to make German products they at least make the stamping so small that most people won't see it without glasses and your unionized dinner guests won't berate you over your Chinese silverware. Also, the knives which could give the game away do not have any such compromising stamp and should a guest start scrutinizing the underside of your spoons or forks you can always enliven your dinner conversation by remarking in a nasal tone, "Is there something the matter? Did the kitchen help not polish your fork, Steve?"I ran the whole set through a dishwasher right after unpacking to see what happens. It came out with the same mineral stains like it does with everything else, including our old silverware. That was reassuring because we are on hard well water and dishes are supposed to look scuzzy after a dishwasher cycle. I put it back in some water, wiped it with a scotch-brite and it came right off. We rarely did it with our old silverware but I'll make the kids polish this new set regularly and I'll always call it "flatware" when I do. That'll give them two more reasons to want to grow up.This silverware deserves 5 stars even though I was tempted to subtract one for using stuck-up words like "flatware" and for misspelling a common word like "bellissimo".

5A Casual Unstructured Porkpie
By Steven Rossellini
On those fall and winter days when you need a hat, but not a hat to really protect you from the cold, the Kangol Mowbray is a stylish and comfortable selection. I have many hats and the Mowbray is one of the most comfortable. I can't emphasize enough, how unstructured and soft this hat really is. Unless it's handled with some caution, it can easily turn into a watch cap. I have a large, and it fits comfortably. In a correctly sized structured fedora, such as a Borsalino, Dobbs, Stetson, Resistol, etc., I wear a 7 3/8 or 59 cm, although with perfect sizing I'd wear a 59.5. The Mowbray will comfortably fit a 60 cm, as it does run a bit large, and is easily stretched to fit.

4Kangol Wool Mowbray
By T. Snyder
I own several styles of Kangol's and wish there were more reviews on them. It's tough to know how they're going to fit ahead of time since you usually can't go to the mall and try all the styles on. I got my Wool Mowbray in flannel, in size Large. Flannel is basically a grey with a little bit of texture/swirl pattern in it. It looks really good as a color. I'm normally a 7 3/8 in New Era baseball caps for reference.First off, the Wool Mowbray (and the Bamboo Mowbray) is a sweet-looking pork pie hat. The shape just looks downright cool. It looks cool just sitting on a desk even when you're not wearing it. I find it fairly structured. It's not really floppy, and it's definitely not rigid. The blend is 60% wool/40% poly. Given the "wool" description in the name, it doesn't feel too thick/ too scratchy. It's fairly thin, but not to the point where I'd wear it during summer though. I would not want to pack it flat on a trip though. I suppose you could, as I think it would retain its shape, but I wouldn't risk the long-term damage on a nice hat.The brim looks much better folded up, as a pork pie. I don't know why anyone would flip it down in the front. If you want to do that, just buy a normal fedora. If you're looking for sun coverage for your eyes, sorry, there isn't any. It basically covers the top of your head. The hat's simplicity and symmetry is part of its appeal to me.I really like that the Wool Mowbray has a lower top/rise than some other Kangol's I have owned (Tropic Player for example). Wool Mowbray fits snug, doesn't feel bulky, or too tall.I have a Bamboo Mowbray too, and the sizing on the wool is maybe a tad bigger than on the Bamboo. I've found that Kangol's wools seem to run a smidge larger in general. Thus, I'm knocking off a point from the 5-star rating.Overall though, this is definitely a great hat for hipsters/ musicians/ anyone a little bit quirky. An all-around-cool hat for non-summer months. I would buy again.

Gitzo GH2720QR Two Way Fluid Head Product Description:

  • Designed to be the perfect tool for bird watching
  • Built in quick release
  • One handle locks both pan and tilt movements
  • Silky smooth fluid movement

Product Description

Bird watching makes completely different demands on equipment used for video or photo applications. Almost all birdwatchers currently use tripod heads specifically developed to support video or photo equipment, which means the heads tend to be larger, heavier and more complicated than is needed for bird watching. This Gitzo head has been developed with one aim in mind: to make them the first, the only, 100% bird watching heads. An unconventional technical approach was used in developing these heads to guarantee ultra stable, precise observation, thanks to three innovations and improvements: fluid cartridges designed specifically for bird watching, the Single Lock System and high-precision internal components and mechanisms. Fluid cartridges on pan and tilt axes give ultra smooth movements that adapt perfectly to speed – from delicately controlled at low speeds (the holy grail for birdwatchers, this makes distance spotting and tracking much easier), to almost completely friction-free at high speeds (useful when fast equipment repositioning is required). A single lock is the other specific innovation for bird watching. Pan and Tilt movements are locked and frictioned in parallel by a single large control knob, making head adjustment simpler, faster and more effective than ever before. All internal mechanisms are tuned to give maximum control and to eliminate even the smallest give or play. The overall design has been optimized to produce a head which is extremely solid, yet lightweight and compact. Stability, precision and structural rigidity: these strengths perfectly match Gitzo carbon fiber tripods, especially the Leveling series, for additional speed and versatility. This combination gives birdwatchers extraordinary performance and portability. With this head, Gitzo continues its long history of inventing and creating products which are highly specialized and uniquely effective.

4Light, rigid, smooth, but quality issues and a couple of minor dislikes
By Peter Headland
Overall, this is an excellent head for spotting scopes. It is very rigid (does not flex or bounce), even when unlocked; I have mine on a hefty set of 3-series Gitzo legs and my scope hardly moves when the wind is howling - I can actually use 60x on a windy day.The friction/locking knob is large, easy to find, and goes from free to locked with a quick twist of the wrist. Most important, the locking knob does not move the scope at all: you can just center your subject up and lock it down. The pan and tilt are good - not as nice as a true fluid head, but plenty adequate for use with a spotting scope, even at high magnifications. There are no balance springs, but tightening the locking knob is rarely necessary unless the scope is at a really extreme angle - the mounting plate lets you get the scope balanced, and there seems to be just the right amount of "stiction" for most situations.Quality issues (minus 1/2 star):I bought a second one of these heads for my wife, and that jammed solid while I was setting it up. After some persuasion, I got it free again, but then the tilt movement was way too loose relative to the pan and could not be tightened fully. I also met a fellow birder using one of these heads and that had a slightly over-loose tilt. Since I purchased from Amazon, I got a replacement (which was perfect) within a couple of days, so no real harm done. Moral of the story - buy from Amazon, and return it if it doesn't feel right.Minor dislikes (minus 1/2 star):* The clamp for the pan handle is plastic, and needs to be tightened down hard to grip the handle. I am slightly concerned how it will stand up to knocks in the field long-term, but Gitzo's customer service is excellent, so I'm sure I will be able to get a replacement if it ever does fail.* The rubber on top of the mounting plate tends to peel up; I plan to put a piece of black tape around that. Interestingly, my wife's example doesn't seem to do this.* The locking knob "clonks" internally as the mechanism takes up slack when you go from locked to free and back again. This doesn't make any difference to the function of the head; it just feels slightly wrong. This is something most people would probably not even notice; I'm just obsessive.A few tips:* I am right-handed, but I switched the handle around to the left side. This means I can move the scope with my left hand and focus/zoom/work the locking knob with my right hand. Some folks simply do without the handle.* Paint a small mark on the locking knob, so you can see at a glance whether the head is locked.* Don't bother with the smaller version of this head - this one is plenty small and light enough.* Put the best carbon-fiber legs you can afford under this head - the latest Gitzo 3-series are great, the next size down Gitzos are adequate. Chinese knock-offs of the Gitzos I have seen were not as stiff/well damped as genuine Gitzo legs; YMMV. 3-section legs are stiffer than 4-section legs (and more convenient most of the time).
