For a top of the line garbage can, the lid DOES NOT close softly!

However, the foot lifting mechanism for the lid is no where near as good as you would expect for a $200 garbage can. The problem with the lid mechanism is that it only works about half the time, if that. It's probably more like just 1/3 of the time. When you open the lid only half way, it just slams shut instead closing softly. You have to press down on the foot mechanism in a semi fast / firm motion in order to activate the soft close. Even then, the soft close is not as soft as their lower models.We have another Simplhuman garbage can that we purchased for $111 from BBB and that can's lid closes softly 100% of the time. I tested our old garbage can to see if I could get it to not work and I could NOT get it to NOT close softly. Even when I only opened the lid 1/4 or 1/2 or 2/3 of the way, it was still able to close softly. This is how the TOP model SHOULD WORK, but unfortunately it doesn't.I don't know if I have a defective garbage can, but the lid mechanism on this TOP OF THE LINE model works NO WHERE NEAR AS GOOD as models costing half the price. The lid on this model is definitely heavier than the lid on our $111 model, but it seems like Simplehuman just used the same "soft closing" mechanism in all of their garbage cans. Because this model is much more heavy duty and has a heavier lid, it should likewise have a much more heavy duty soft closing mechanism that can support the heavier lid. It really feels like the soft close mechanism can't handle the weight of this lid.I'm returning my garbage can for another one. Hopefully the second one will live up to its price. If not, then it's going back as well.I docked 3 stars because this is a garbage can, the only things it needs to do is open the lid and close the lid. For this price, can it please DO IT WELL!!? At this price, it should do it more than just well, it should it with such perfection that you don't need to spend a single moment regretting your expensive purchase!UPDATE:Please see update in comments below. I decided to knock another star off this model. I would not keep a $200 garbage can that didn't soft close 100% of the time, whether you opened it 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3 or 3/4 of the way open. I ended up buying the robotic lid model, it was the same price.

Stable, big, sturdy + recycling

We got this trash can when they started selling it I think a couple years ago and have loved it (well, considering it's just a trash can...).I worried it was too big before we got it (we have a small kitchen), but considering we get both trash and recycling stowed away. For a small family it's a good size -- don't have to go out with the trash every day, but it's not so big that it gets gross before we do. When having a party or other occasion for generating more trash you can take out the smaller bins and just use it as one ~15 gallon trash can (that's a lot of trash).Don't underestimate how convenient it is to have recycling, too.My favorite feature though is how stable it is. There's never a worry that it'll tip over (or barely move, even) when you step on it to open it up. Also, the lid closes quietly and it's easy to keep clean.Only downsize is that you really want to use the SimpleHuman trash bags ("size G") which are about twice as much per bag as a regular kitchen trash bag. For our use we calculated it to not be too much a year; but you might think differently (but then maybe you should reconsider looking at an expensive trash can in the first place!). The simplehuman bags also seems to only come in small 20 bag packs.*Update 2 years later* - Yup, still love this thing (however much love a trashcan can get, anyway). It has a few dents from stuff falling on the lid from our stairs above the kitchen, but several years and hundreds of trash bags later it still works great and looks good.

Scratches way too easily

I love simplehuman products. And though I'm giving this three stars, I'd still recommend it. But I have two problems with it - 1) no wheels. I'd thought a can with this construction would have retractable wheels at the bottom. But it doesn't, and it's heavy so it's a pain to move to clean the floor. 2) scratches easily. I was trying to think if this was true of stainless steel appliances, and it's not. So I don't understand why this can scratches as easily as it does. I only bought this in July of last year and it already looks like it needs to be buffed. For the price, I'd expect a little more in this dept. But it's construction is rock solid and I couldn't be happier as far as that's concerned.
