Schluter Ditra 1/8" Underlayment 54sqft Product Description:

- 1/8" - 3 mm
Product Description
Ceramic and stone tiles are durable, easy to maintain, and hygienic, representing the ideal surface coverings. However, today's lightweight construction methods can make the installation of hard surface coverings particularly challenging. In order to protect the integrity of the tile assembly, an underlayment that performs multiple functions is required. Schluter-DITRA is a polyethylene membrane with a grid structure of square cavities, each cut back in a dovetail configuration, and an anchoring fleece laminated to its underside. Schluter-DITRA is bonded to the substrate using thin-set mortar. The anchoring fleece on the underside of Schluter-DITRA is fully engaged in the mortar to provide a mechanical bond to the substrate. Tile is installed over Schluter-DITRA using the thin-bed method in such a way that the mortar becomes mechanically anchored in the square, cutback cavities of the Schluter-DITRA matting. Designed specifically for ceramic tile and dimension stone installations, Schluter-DITRA serves as an uncoupling layer, waterproofing membrane, and vapor management layer that accommodates moisture from beneath the tile covering. Further, DITRA performs all these functions while still providing adequate support/load distribution for the tile covering. a) Uncoupling Tile has been successfully installed for thousands of years by incorporating an uncoupling layer, or forgiving shear interface, within the tile assembly. Schluter-DITRA provides uncoupling through its open rib structure, which allows for in-plane movement that effectively neutralizes the differential movement stresses between the substrate and the tile, thus eliminating the major cause of cracking and delaminating of the tiled surface. b) Waterproofing Schluter-DITRA provides reliable waterproofing in interior and exterior applications. Its polyethylene composition protects the substrate from moisture penetration. c) Vapor management d) Support / load distribution

Great Product
By Matt Wiens
Having laid tile several times throughout my life, I was used to using cement board prior to laying tile on wood sub-floors. Even though I would not classify myself as a "tile expert", I am very skilled and have a couple times when the tile has popped free of the cement board and i've had to relay a tile or two. I recently saw this product on "Holmes on Holmes" and thought it might be more trouble than it was worth but saw the utility of the grid system and its use in making a better seal to the floor. I followed the directions that came on the roll and in an 8 x 5 laundry room (very small space to work) I rolled it out, trimmed it to fit, mixed my thinset and within 30 minutes was laying my tile out on my newly laid underlayment. after about 3 hours, i was completely finished. Now, a month later, the floor is wonderful, and I have no evidence of cracking or popping tiles. I enjoyed using this product and "feel" like I have better adhesion to the floor and subfloor than I would if I had used cement board. Good Stuff!

Once you go Ditra, you never go back
By NurseLovesDeals
After doing extensive research, I decided to use Ditra on my bathroom floor install instead of hardybacker. I am so glad I did! Not only is it super light weight, but cuts like butter with a sharp utility knife. My new 18x18 Travertine floor feels very sturdy and I know it will last forever since I used Ditra.I am by no means an expert (I am a nurse!) but my husband and I did this by ourselves and saved a ton of money. I will try to attached some pics if I can figure out how.My only tip: Make sure you read the instructions that are available online from Schluter's website and watch the videos! We did not make our thinset runny enough when attaching the Ditra to the subfloor and had some troubles. You want this layer very thin and soup-y!Also, there is a forum online about laying tile and I had to TON of help from all the experts on that site. They are very knowledgeable. Just search online for "John Bridge tile forum".

Easy to use, light weight
By MU2RAY
Compared to heavy, dusty backer board and other cement products, this is a breeze. It's super light weight and easy to move around the site. Not a speck of dust is generated. It's still hard work to install, as you're working with thinset (let's face it, floor projects of any size are a lot of work!), but the tools are minimal: tape measure, box cutter, marker, trowel. One thing we really appreciated is the fact that the Ditra gives you lots of straight and square lines to line up your tiles on; especially nice if you're working with a pattern and can't take advantage of a snap line.Unless you have callused hands to start with, you might want to wear some kind of fabric/padded gloves to protect your knuckles and the heels of your hands. Leaning on your hands on all those little waffle cups takes its toll after a while. Same goes for your knees. One big bonus: Because we used Ditra instead of any thicker options we were able to get our dishwasher back in place on top of the newly laid tile. If we had used anything thicker, this would have been impossible.
