Great Potential - One Fatal Flaw
By Chris Spiess
I researched for months the best 4-bay NAS for the money. I looked at Synology, QNAP, and Netgear. Synology had great reviews and leads the pack in price/performance. The demo of their DSM (on their website) is impressive. Finally, I settled and bought the DS-411+. Setup was easy and it performed extremely well. however, after a few days - it lost it's configuration. It could not be accessed via it's web interface and the Synology Assistant software showed that it was assigned a new IP via DHCP (it also reported it as a DS-1010+ with the older 2.x Firmware). A reboot seemed to sort things out and all was well; until a few more days - when it lost it's configuration once again. I spent about three weeks with Synology's tech support (they only offer email support, no phone support, which delayed things) and gave their techs access to the device via telnet and the web interface. They could find nothing wrong and suggested it was the electrical circuit the device was on (even though I had run other NASes and servers on the same circuit for 3+ years without a single problem). I placed it on another circuit and a few days later, the same problem. Finally, I am in the process of returning this item for QNAP. The Synology would have been perfect if it was stable. It has been a month of headache and wasted time and it is going to cost me (in return fees and possibly restocking fees) to return it; but the one flaw was to much to overlook. I want to like the device, but first it has to maintain it's configuration. Maybe one day they will fix this issue (in Synology's forums there are a couple others reporting very similar issues with different models) and it will be a great device. I am not thinking this will affect the vast majority either, but just wanted to share one man's ordeal.

Upgraded from DS409 for the speed. I'm happy!
By M. Ash
Hardware: iMac i7 8gb and macbook pro 8gb with 160bg intel ssd.History:I have a DS409 on gigabit network and averaged 18-29mbps with apple time capsule (latest version) and was looking for faster speeds to support my photo library, 4 ip cameras, and media streaming. I was sick of the slow speeds and bought the ds411 when Amazon had a rare 10% off sale.Pro'sFAST - Not unusual to hit speeds over 90MB/sec.Firmware 3.0 is very goodSame construction as ds409 with 1 minusCons'Speed fluctuates for some reason. I have tried jumbo/no jumbo frame and now switched to a DLink 8 port router. I will get between 40-95 MB/Sec. I would say it averages 70MB/sec and the only way I get it into the 90's if I copy from multiple drives. I have a fast setup and not sure why I'm seeing slower speeds then some of the online reviews using windows devices.http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DGS-2208-8-Port-Desktop-Switch/dp/B000FITKK8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1283063358&sr=8-1.Loss of USB port in the front. This is actually a little annoying as I used 1 usb for UPS, 1 for a fireproof USB hard drive for key documents and then 1 for backup. Now I'm using a esata hard drive for backups.I'm a huge fan of Synology and find it so much easier then the HP Mediasmart center I returned. Synology iPhone apps are great and I have had NO problems.

Does it all, if you put in the time.
By Bob Marley
I bought the DS411+ from Amazon a few weeks back and added 4 WD Caviar Black 1TB drives. The setup process is relatively easy, but it takes some time. The documentation is very good but it will be harder for someone who is not technically savvy.Pros -- Great transfer speeds- Feature rich - You can host your own websites, email server, photo server, music server, media streamer and much more. These features are more common with a server than a NAS, hence why this system costs more than the basic NAS units.- Quiet operation- Great documentation- Streaming 1080P video, audio, and photos to my PS3 is simple and the quality is amazing.- iPhone apps work very well, even remotely.Cons -- The only problem I had was related to my complex home network. This Synology machine should be on the same subnetwork as your main router and streaming destinations.(ie. - if you have two+ routers in your system) If not then it makes it impossible to stream content. This machine is solid and I'm thrilled with the features as well as the data security and access I now have.
