great for my urban jungle
By A. Berger
I always wanted a compass watch so every time I emerge from a subway station I can check my watch to immediately know which way do I now walk to get uptown or the east side, etc. Now I press the compass button and find 20 is uptown, 110 is east, 200 is downtown and 290 is the west side. The watch diameter and the way the dense neoprene band is styled, looks a lot better on my narrow wrist than I imagined. If you fear rubber will make your wrist sweat, don't worry - this neoprene will keep your wrist dry and comfortable. The watch is thicker and heavier than I realized, but after wearing cheap Casio G-Shocks all these years, I don't mind getting used to this higher quality European equivalent. This really is a very masculine watch that you can read the analog time from yards away. There is actually a dot of phosphorus on the minute and hour hands, as well as the arabic numerals, so you can read the analog time in the dark without pushing for the digital time readout. The digital display is a bit more faded near the adjoining edges of each LED line than the photos convey, but it's still very readable, and the way the LED is hidden behind the black textured watch face is ultra cool and unique to this watch.I catch a lot of people on the subway trying to read the time off my wrist, and enjoy wearing this watch on the treadmill and while swimming laps a few times each week. Anyone looking for an rugged male analog/digital hybrid watch should give this Wenger some serious consideration even if it's a bit over their budget - just wait till it's priced at least 35% under MSRP since the price fluctuates widely based on domestic availability.User Notes: This watch does NOT have any chronograph, countdown, or alarm functions, which is a shame considering it has so many buttons - I mean do you really need to know what DAY it is? The analog and digital time can be programmed seperately to provide a GMT feature, however keep in mind that when you adjust the analog time, it may automatically reset the digital to the same time, so you may have to reset the digital time separately to the different timezone you may require. I'm nervous this watch does not have a true sapphire crystal face, so I guess only time will tell if this special coated glass lense will stay scratch free after years of abuse. It's worth investing in a watch back removal tool Wrist Watch Repair / Maintenance Kit w/ 16 Tools (its the wrench handle with 2 black adjustable points sticking out) and CR2032 Batteries Maxell CR2032 lithium ion batteries (pack of 5 ) If you plan on pressing the buttons for the LED display more often than not. While you can't do your own waterproof testing, if you close the watch back carefully, the gaskets should remain viable for about 5 years before needing to go to Wenger for a replacement set of back and crown gaskets. I'm not sure how the push button gaskets work as to require replacement or not in the far future.

Simply nice.
By John Q. Consumer
There are other reviews for this watch but with red or yellow stitching & lettering - I guess the green makes it a different model. Like others have said, the band is unusually short. It fits me fine on the second or third to last latch-hole which is okay, but if you have big wrists you'll need a different band. And the tiny bit of excess band may pop out of the retention loop, which might get annoying.I like the rubberized band, too. The watch is very comfortable despite its size. It's not too heavy but feels solid and high-quality. Most other compass watches I saw had all kinds of features I didn't need, like altimeter, thermometer, etc. This is a simple, functional watch that is classy while also sporty. I'm a big fan of keeping things simple (and working). The LED screen is invisible so it looks like just an analog watch until you press a button. Of course the buttons and the unnecessary text give away the fact it's digital. Other reviews also mention how the hands of the watch are not Luminova but the numbers on the face oddly are. The company says this is because the glowing hands would interfere with the LED read-out, which makes sense. I like that the numbers glow anyway, but I guess there's no point in it. The compass displays the direction as a number on a 360 degree circle, so you have to think a second to figure out your direction. A simple "N" "NW" type read out would do - no one is using this to navigate the jungle (I hope). Alternatly, putting the numbers 0-359 (or 1-360) around the bezel would be useful.Summary:It's odd how short the strap is, but it fits an average wrist. There are two loops to hold down the excess band on the exit-side of the buckle. I cut one off. It's peculiar that the numbers glow but the hands don't, but at night you have the LED display anyway, so whatever. The compass takes some getting used to, but it does lend it greater accuracy. It's easy to calibrate the compass, easy to set the date & time, and easy to use the watch. It looks, feels, and works great. I love it.Here's an update: if you like this watch (which I still do) you may also like the "Field Ops Watch" from 5.11 Tactical. The price is similar.

Water Resistance
By George Van Etten
The watch has a nice feel to it when worn but I should have spent a little more and purchased the Armorlite watch w/ the tritium which allows for excellent night viewing. The compass on this watch is a waste of money, so do not purchase for that particular function. The crown not being a screw down concerns me as I use this watch primarily for beach and pool use, the water resistance is yet to be seen.Spend a few dollars more and purchase the armorlite.....
